Why is my Dog Itchy?

Causes

The most common reason your dog might be experiencing itchy skin is a medical condition called allergic dermatitis (skin allergies). Allergic dermatitis is when your dog’s body overreacts to an allergen in the environment or food, which may make them feel itchy.

Here are some of the possible causes for this:

Environment. Your dog may be triggered by certain environmental aspects, pollen, mold spores, and dust mites just to name a few. Environmental allergens can cause itchiness year-round, not just during specific seasons. If a dog has environmental allergies it'll often show signs around their face, belly, and paws. If your dog gets itchy outdoors, invest in an outdoor dog bed or a raised platform to keep them off the ground.

Fleas. Many times flea bites create extremely itchy areas on your dog. they are most commonly found at the hind legs, the base of the tail, and rear end. Just a single bite from a single flea can cause an allergic reaction.

Food. Some dogs are allergic to the ingredients in many dog foods such as beef, poultry, and dairy products. Food allergies in dogs can result in signs of allergic itch around the paws, face, armpits, and belly. Allergic dermatitis can lead to other health problems if left untreated. If a dog licks or scratches a specific area excessively, it can cause damage to the skin and may lead to more serious skin infections and wounds, which can result in hair loss, body odor, inflammation, and severe pain.
